Ensuring the Safety of Our Nation’s Food Supply

Challenge: Expand and rehabilitate the Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) laboratory for the Department of Homeland Security at the Plum Island Animal Disease Center.

Solution: Veterans Engineering leveraged its expertise in construction management to ensure that the challenging $35M project enhanced the facility’s research and defense activities against the accidental or intentional introduction of transboundary animal diseases. The facility utilizes well-established, contemporary biosafety and biosecurity practices and procedures to ensure the safety and security of personnel, the facility, and materials, including the disease-causing organisms under study.

Client Impact: The lab is able to continue its work to ensure that safe food is on American tables while preventing the escape of contaminants from the facility.
