Supporting the VA’s IT Transformation

Challenge: Migrate 350 legacy applications to the Department of Veterans Affairs Enterprise Cloud (VAEC) by 2024.

Solution: The Veterans Engineering team was instrumental in developing a consistent approach to managing the migration process to the VAEC. For this ongoing project, the Veterans Engineering team takes data inputs and produces outputs across the migration process, with checkpoint milestones throughout all stages, and obtains new ATOs (authority to operate) as needed.

Client Impact: In 2018, the VA had about 10 IT capabilities (systems, applications, services, databases, storage, and platforms) in the cloud in various siloed environments. As of June 2021, the VA has 124 IT capabilities in the VAEC. Migrating applications like VistA Audit Solution to the VAEC allows the VA to retrieve targeted audit records from archived storage instead of accessing all records simultaneously, significantly reducing costs and decreasing processing time..
