Veterans Engineering (VE), working alongside the VA’s Office of Information and Technology (OIT), has migrated all of the VA’s electronic health records (EHR) to the cloud, ensuring digital modernization and patient safety for our Veterans.
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Electronic Health Record (EHR) system is called VistA. Historically, the VistAs, the hospital’s brains, have sat in data centers that are not tiered to provide the multi-site to drive the availability and uptime necessary to support patient care in the event of a single facility outage.
In collaboration with the VA’s Office of Information and Technology (OIT), Veterans Engineering architected a solution to migrate VistA’s 130+ on-premises instances, comprising over 15 million lines of code through nearly 200 integrated applications accessing petabytes of lab, imaging, and text notes data, to the VA’s Enterprise Cloud.
Since 2019, VA/OIT has been working with VHA to migrate VistA instances out of data centers and into VA’s Enterprise Cloud. Migrating to the AWS cloud with multiple availability zones will improve patient safety through VistA reliably. VistA performs hundreds of millions of clinical, administrative, and financial transactions that support hundreds of thousands of Veteran care encounters annually. This is the largest EHR migration in history!
